IQ aids in practically all productive activities, and has the highest transferability of any psychometric when it comes to performance at intellectual tasks.

Using your intellect when you're young also has a somewhat positive effect on IQ, as does proper diet and exercise etc, so parents being proud of their children having high IQ is entirely justified.
