I'm going to spare you repeating starship troopers (oops) but military fiction is something I love too, though nothing /really/ good in recent memory is coming to mind. Maybe if I think for a while. Only related thing decent that I've read lately is Other Times than Peace, by David Drake.

I'm terrible with recommendations. Literary amnesia.

Flashman. The series is basically a 19th century James Bond, except cowardly and morally bankrupt. He tangles with just about every imperial adventure between 1840-1900.
