They do nothing productive all day (except very occasionally writing) and their vacations, parties and hedonism is funded entirely by the money given to them by their parents/families and the exchange rate. They are all man children jusr living in Paris rather than the parents' basement, which is probably where they go back to after the novel

It's true for lots of Hemingway characters really: Frederic in Farewell to Arms also funds all his vacations and his post-war life by continually drawing/extorting money from his parents back home. What is he when living in Switzerland but a NEET?

The total financial dependency of his characters is a funny counterpoint to muh strong independent masculinity - and also to the fact that most of them profess to hate their parents
