sorry, mangled the quote (it was from memory):

"For what sense or understanding have they? They follow minstrels and take the multitude for a teacher, not knowing that many are bad and few good. For the best men choose one thing above all – immortal glory among mortals; but the masses stuff themselves like cattle."

Let me quote a bit, would you?
>“Discussion of fantasy, science fiction, and just about any other literature (Yes, this includes comic books!)”
>“Discuss the storylines of the novels, comics and more”
>“What do you imagine your favorite literary character looks like?”

All you will find on those websites is Reddit-tier content, endless threads on A Song of Ice and Fire, teenager's poetry sharing, people pretending having read classics, charts and political correctness flowing through every message. /lit/ is a shithole too but it still is a bit less mediocre.

Good communities are hidden as much as possible. Once they're exposed, less cultivated members come and soon flood the place with their own mediocre writings, superficial commentaries and empty discussions about bestsellers. There's no way someone will help finding them.

Not the French Anon but I can assure you, you do not want to be in a 19th century board with french frogs. From what Franon says it seems all they do is complain about the current state of the arts--I guarantee it

No way. I don't even believe it would help you, the way we talk is not something you should read if you want to speak French properly.

Try instead http://ia802703.us.archive.org/17/items/contesfranais00buffgoog/contesfranais00buffgoog.pdf If you think you can handle it.

>>7054265
No, we mostly discuss the work itself, literature history, language matters and grammar. Of course we all whine about the decadence of the literature but it's not that important. And by “classical” I rather meant 16th to 18th centuries than 19th.

Thanks, but I have actually read that already. So far I've read that, Le Petit Prince, L'étranger, a few magazines and comics, and I just started La Place de l'étoiles. I feel like I need actual interaction now, or at least to see some. Do you happen to know of any other French message boards about literature? My preference would actually be for something more oriented towards contemporary lit, though (since it's currently a gap in my knowledge).

>> No.7054322

>>7054307
Well, I don't know anything that would fulfill your needs. Contemporary literature is less discussed in France, many authors like Houellebecq even seems more famous in English speaking countries. Places like Etudes-litteraires are actually quite inactive and extremely disappointing in term of writing quality and you maybe would try dedicated forums on websites like Jeuxvideo.com but it's pretty mediocre if you want my opinion. You can still look for a French thread here on /lit/.

To be honest I don't think those groups would arouse my curiosity for it probably talks about news and current trends. My attention is more excited by grammar, stylistic and æsthetics debates, classical studies and linguistics. I tried to get into Chomskyan linguistics but can't help feeling not interested with such a level of abstraction.

To be honest, I don't believe any community with literary aspirations would highly regard someone who does not punctuate his single sentence despite answering five hours later. Such a degree of laxness leaves little room to respect and credibility.

Indeed but /lit/ has occasionally good discussions and, at, least, is quite aware of being this pretentious to the extend of making fun of it. Also, I think many people whose English isn't the mother tongue come on /lit/ to practise.

Unless the moderation is severe, which imply a high control, less worthwhile, productive members will flood the place and change its architecture. It's not hard to outnumber a small community, particularly on literature where few actually know what they're talking about.

Do you imply it was an error of you? Does that “lmao” is also a memory lapse?

>> No.7056445

>>7056378
Yes, and the point of strict moderation is to keep people like that there, and stupid outsiders away. You might say this limits freedom of expression, but people who have shown themselves to be intelligent will have special privileges to post the kinds of things they want to, whereas newbies will have to prove themselves first.
