I just read Marcus Aurelius's Meditations, and he said something interesting.

>"Socrates used to call popular opinions 'bogies', things to frighten children with."

Sound familiar?
Was Stirner referencing Socrates? Are spooks = bogies? Were bogies a young hegelian meme?

Discuss.

I really, really like this concept

Similar but Socrates didn't go far enough and realize that unpopular ideas are spooks too

COULD MOZART BE ALIVE?

But seriously, nice find

Can you explain that? The only thing Socrates called spooks are popular ideas.

Just doing what philosophers have always been up to. Questioning the status quo in order to live a better life

Is that movie worth watching?

Bogies, according to Socrates point of view, are closer to "Thou Shalt not" rules rather than constructs.
Abstraction seems to be more important to Stirner, so I don't know if you could say they're the same.
Not to punch holes in what seems to be a legitimate theory.
Etymology aside, they both refer to a same ephemeral force:
4 more letters and they would be the same word in German.
Understanding language can sometimes be the key to understanding philosophy.

Very good points, I do not think that Stirner and Socrates were talking about the same things. Rather Socrates's use of "bogies" probably inspired Stirner's use of "spook." Do you know what the words are in German?
