should i read dune, is it any good or is it mostly praised for the supposed innovations it made within the genre?

If it interests you, go right ahead.
The sequels are generally thought less of is all.

That is one big chinese finger trap.

>> No.7031082

pretty nice

the sequels progressively pissed me off the more I read though, to the point I had to force myself to read the last half of the one with the sluts from outer space

>> No.7031097

yeah its a great book
why else would assholes be arguin about it

>> No.7031105

>>7031082
Is there any point in reading the sequels? I don't want to get caught up in a series that I'm going to drop again after a few books.

>> No.7031110

OP: you shouldn't read Dune. you should avoid it and spend your entire life wondering what it would have been like if you'd spent a week or so - depending on your reading speed - just fucking reading it yourself.

are you worried that reading books might contaminate you somehow, so you only read the right ones?

why? do you honestly have anything better to do with your life? i understand it's a tough choice. "hm.. read a book, or play another round of Mario Kart... wat do?"

the Sequels by Frank Herbert are okay. the PREQUELS by his son and Kevin Anderson are garbage. pretty much the only books i've read once and then left on a park bench for the seagulls to shit on.

I can think of a lot of better things to do than read a bad book (or play mario kart). I still have some books sitting on my shelf that I'd like to get to soon, it's just that I've just finished Dune and it's still fresh in my mind so if I was going to read any other books in the series I would want to read those first.
So I guess I won't read them than. I dislike not following the story to the end but I'd rather not finish something than invest time in something I'm going to hate.

Do what everyone does and finish with the best.
Of cause you may not understand this until you've already done it by which this is meaningless to you.

oh yeah. Dune is such a bad book that there have been two attempts to make films of it, a tv miniseries, Herbert wrote five sequels, there was an encyclopedia and god knows how many prequels. that must be one shitty book right there.

Read the first two and then stop.

The second book is the only one that really has a proper and definitive ending.

thats not a criticism of the first book
I'm sure lots of words appear in it
And considering there is a lot of BETRAYAL going on, it could be subtext

If you are accustomed to fleshed-out characters and well-written prose, you will hate Dune.

Read DUNE.

If you like it and want more, read the next two books, Messiah and Children of DUNE. Know ahead of time that Children takes a weird turn for the franchise near the last quarter or so of the book.

If you are left unsatisfied after that and still crave more, go and read up on the plot of God Emperor of DUNE. If you still feel interested after some research on it, then prepare yourself for Gom Jabbar. Some people on Earth will swear by God Emperor. Some people on Earth are pants on head crazy.

If you survive and are STILL interested, then rejoice. Heretics of DUNE and Chapterhouse: DUNE are as far removed from God Emperor as it is from Children. After rejoicing, commence your sorrow, as Heretics and Chapterhouse are all build up with no payoff. Herbert passed before the series could meander back into a comprehensive narrative. But, if you really want more DUNE, well there's two novels for you.

Meh, I enjoyed Lady Jessica and the Baron.

Paul is meant to be a Mary Sue. The wrong point of the series is that messiahs/saviors are bad.
