I didn't do the SAT. Why do people do these tests?

I have never done it and don't know anyone that did. SAT tests are literally a meme from TV and people on the internet to me.

SAT is a means of measuring academic preparedness (on a scale of 0 to 2,400 or so) and is vital, often moreso than High School grades, in getting accepted into US universities.
ACT is a similar, though different test with a different grade scale (0-36). Most Universities will look at either test.

Academic preparedness or inherent ability can't be measured objectively. SAT may be the best system we have but its not a perfect system.

College courses are 'mostly' the same in every university. Numerous tests and assignments are a far better gauge of ability than a single test that measures grade school level coursework.

oldfag here, so i took the old version on the 1600 point scale the year before they added the writing portion

1390 (750 verbal, 640 math)

only took it once because i lived in ACT-land (btw scored a 31 on that, second try), and was going to uni near home (worst decision of my life tbh). still bugs me i didn't break 1400

Didn't do the SAT or ACT because I knew my grades in high school weren't good enough to get a bunch of scholarships no matter how well I did on those tests.

I decided it was more productive to study my coursework thoroughly, as opposed to sperging out about tests and overall grades, and go to a community college that could give less of a fuck about what my grades were instead. That way I could pay for school with my poverty and get an associates degree and use that as a stepping stone towards a bachelor's in my field of interest at a larger school.

Seriously, why the fuck would I take extra tests in school that are outside of my curriculum to get noticed by big schools that I couldn't afford to go to when I could just pay attention and go to a smaller school that I can go to for free? Seems pretty silly to me.

They don't have SAT in my country and I didn't want to to go America for school so I didn't take it. We had something sort of similar called Provincial Exams that were supposed to be standard and were what the universities looked at. There was one of these exams for each major course eg English, French, Math, Physics, History, etc. etc. I remember them being a bit harder than the average high school exam because the curriculum never exactly matched my school curriculum, and if we're being honest, I'm not that smart. Now I'm reading that they're not even required anymore except for English.

The SAT is essentially an intelligence test that is used by American colleges to select applicants. I'm guessing you watch American TV.

I find it strange that you jumped to the conclusion that it was a "meme", rather than that it being an actual thing that you haven't directly experienced, and that explains why it's commonly references on TV and the Internet.
