Hey, so is Howl's Moving Castle (the book) any good?

The film in OP's picture is wonderful, but I was wondering if the book is worth a read.

Hahaha oh wow, I just did the same thing. Whatcha readin', anon? I've got the Fountainhead after finishing Atlas Shrugged a week or so ago.

Your problem was attempting to read Ulysses sober, and caring about the meaning.

Personally I never read Joyce if I can see straight, and he only gets good after the second vomit.

The fountainhead. I sort of like it. But don't really grasp why its a classic. It isn't on the same level like Joseph Hellers witty novel Catch-22 or Harry Mulisch's The Discovery Of Heaven. But still a good book.
>Implying reading harry mulisch's the discovery of heaven in an other language than dutch is actually recommended. While its not.

What is difficult about it? (I'm planning on reading it myself soon)

>> No.702448

there are a lot of references to other works, mainly the ilias. If you haven't read those books you're going to miss a lot of the books meaning. That book is meant to read slowly while having 20 dictonairies and reference books by your side. Or just being a librarian.

>> No.702452

>>702448
OP here. I tried reading very slowly, looking up anything out of place that seemed like an allusion. The effect the book has on you is "how the fuck is this guy that good at writing?" or "what is this i dont even" depending on how successful you are at using references

>> No.702453

>>702448
Well that sucks. I knew it had a lot of literary references but didn't know they were vital to the meaning. Also, by ilias do you mean the Iliad?

>> No.702457

>>702437
Yeah, I'm about halfway through with the Fountainhead. There are a few things I'd change in a heartbeat, but it's still good enough for me to keep going!

>> No.702458

iliad is the american name. Ilias the dutch name.
In old greek the book was called Ἰλιάς. Which is open for more then one translation. I choose the dutch one because I find it closer to the original name and because i'm dutch.
