I'm looking for books that critique democracy.

Whether it's a left or right wing critique doesn't matter.

Any recommendations?

The passages on Democracy in the Republic are pretty good.

Nietzsche has a pretty sustained attack on democracy in Beyond Good & Evil.

De Tocqueville's Democracy in America also features a bunch of very interesting critiques of at least American democracy, a number of which are similar to Nietzsche's.

Joseph de Maistre's works are full of critiques of Democracy. Also see Carl Schmitt- The Crisis of Parliamentary Democracy, for a piercing account of the irreconcilability between democracy and parliamentarian process.

Up, Simba by David Foster Wallace is one of the most important political essays of 21s century and deals with the subtle failure of democracy in America.

Any reading you can do on failures of democracy in the third world, particularly where the US planted it, will be useful.
