Analysis of the material, and by that I even mean things like light and sound because they themselves are distortions and movements in the material field. So yeah it's pretty fucking important considering we are concrete, material beings.

How does logic allow us to analyze this vaguely defined material?

It has a ton of professional applications if you work in anything even related to philosophy, computer science, linguistics, mathematics, etc.

As for a layperson, I don't know. There is is probably most useful for learning to spot, avoid and refute fallacies.

By using recognizable patterns to measure and observe things we interact with.

The things we can interact with are material, or natural. The things we can't are thus, supernatural.

It's good for disregarding faulty assumptions, i.e. not saying and thinking stupid things.

e.g. "Vaccines cause autism!" (see: causation vs. correlation)

I have had people in the gym tell me that what allows you do bench press more weight is by making loud grunting noises. If I am thinking correctly, they are confusing a cause and an effect.

Loud grunting noises are an effect of weight training (or exerting any physical effort), not a cause. If such were the case, the person who grunts the loudest or feels he's exerting the most effort would lift the heaviest weights. But effort is, of course, different for each person depending on their current strength training level.

Logic is very good for trying, and failing, to convince people that you're right.

When you crack out the logic, you'll usually be subjected to a barrage of sophistry and indignant bluster, after which your opponent withdraws, convinced that they've categorically destroyed your argument, and that the debate is over.

This is why, when debating in person, I'd rather arm myself with a good stout cudgel, than any pedigree of logic.

Fraknly, half the arguments I have on /lit/ would have been over much sooner that way, and would have reached a more personally satisfying conclusion.

That doesn't sound like logic as I understand it. Logic is the science of correct reasoning. It has practically nothing to do with making material claims.
