They absolutely do mean something, but you're making the mistake of thinking IQ is supposed to be entirely heritable or to make you good at things beyond the types of problems presented in the tests. Think about it this way, if you aren't from the culture the test is made for, you probably will need to adjust to perform well in it despite how you may score on a test tailored to your native culture.

The inborn component of intelligence is referred to as "g" and has been for like 50 years. IQ is just a measure of where you're at the day you take the test and can change with changes in lifestyle. Thing is, when you measure people at 18 or so, the ones with higher IQs make more money and overall have better lives (keeping in mind the idea of statistical significance, which means these results are valid despite the top 0.1% not making 1000x as much money as everyone else just to fit the curve). Measuring at a young age is a lot less meaningful and so people jump on the whole concept.
