They realized he was a creative force during TGTTM (probably just working as a rank and file editor for the show) and let him influence Awesome Show with his art. His erratic editing is an integral part of the humor.

From what I know about him, as a young man he was a working editor doing basic shit, weddings and such, while trying to make visual art. High concept "wall of eyeballs"-type stuff for art galleries. Sam talks a lot like he's providing a great insight into "millenial culture", making fun of stereotypical behaviour. But how accurate is it really?

Everything he states is cloaked with the potential to just be ironic. If everything is potentially insincere, we can't know what you truly believe. You are in a sense immune from criticism, because you're not putting out what you actually think, completely unfettered by attempts at subversion/satire/parody/etc.

There will be those who follow it and champion it because they think there is a profound message within it. If you don't "get it", you're an idiot, or the butt of the joke, but I suspect most of these people wouldn't be able to articulate what it's truly about, or they glean what they _want_ Sam to be saying - so they can identify with this controversial, seemingly insightful dude. An emperor's new clothes kind of situation, with a bit of projection thrown in.

My guess is that Sam just likes fucking with people. Spending a lot of time on FYAD, which was essentially proto-4chan (before this place became a little less "epic ruse" obsessed) likely influenced a sense of humour which revolves around fucking with people just for the sake of it, and perhaps he feels like he's above it all, by behaving absurdly and mocking society. If he acts like this all of the time and it's not just an act for the camera, I can only imagine the guy is insufferable.
