I know it's kinda off topic, but, which of these do you guys think is the best life option:

to graduate in history and study philosophy by yourself
or
graduate in philosophy and study history by yourself?

Philosophy is the only humanities degree worth a shit. Take Phil and study X whenever.

studying history is not worth it. you won't learn anything valuable. it's basically a few years of research and writing papers.

>it's basically a few years of research and writing papers
How is this different from any other degree in the humanities? And "you won't learn anything valuable" from history? Wtf are you smoking?

Both of those are terrible unrealistic ideas.

Make money first, then achieve your dreams.

reading history and studying history are two different things. the first is about gaining knowledge, the second is about being able to compile information and present it in a way that's clear and concise. most people going into college should already be able to do that.

Study science, get a job and a family (optional) live philosophy, study history, do something useful to mankind and get paid to it

All I know is if you are not studying history at university, you wont know a great deal of it.

I encourage everyone to study history privately outside of academia, but if that's what you do you need to be aware of the limits of your sources and thus your knowledge. Probably applies to every academic field, but history especially.

There are far too many people here on /lit/ that might have read a couple of books on a subject and post grand, baseless generalizations that would never be accepted by a respected historian.

As to which degree will give you a more secure means to support yourself, I couldn't say.

To discuss lit. We don't have to be taking a degree in it. As long as we're reading and discussing. A couple of courses is encouraged to familiarize yourself with the ideas of critics and other writers, but an entire lit degree is certainly not a necessity.
