For real - what is the best translation of this? I keep hearing I need to read it to understand western literature, so help me out christfags.

The King James Version is pretty unanimously agreed by scholars to have the most literary merit, and it was certainly the most influential in English (especially as it sublated other versions that influenced English). It's really a great translation--for instance, whereas some prior Protestant versions translated presbyter as "elder", and Catholics translated it as "priest", the King James translates the word as "presbyter". The unique tradition of the Church of England, in having both super Protestant and super Catholic parishes in it, allowed for a translation that wasn't biased in a period when both Protestants and Catholics were scrambling to attack each other. The only serious revisions made to it to this day, including up the NRSV, are simply arbitrary alterations in translations where both are just as valid, update in the language, and political correctness (the NRSV translates brothers as "believers" much of the time, as an example). It's the best choice, especially if you get one that includes the Apocrypha.

What's a translation that:
1. Is written in modern English (no thous, thines, thees etc)
2. Was translated from the source language directly
3. Conveys the original meaning as close as possible

Also, an edition that contains translation notes would be nice.

No, it's pretty awful. It changes "brothers" to "brothers and sister" and "believers" and so on, in order to be politically correct. The Oxford Annotated NRSV even blasts the shit out of it in one of the essays at the end, where it says in several places the NSRV intentionally errs in translation to reconcile verses. How can you say it's the best Bible for "serious study"?

RSV is actually pretty good. Not as beautiful as the King James, but still a very good translation. The NRSV is just awful, though.
