the thing with homophobia is that usually some bigot's hatred is more than likely rooted in some sort of fear

I'd say the the whole idea of prescriptivism vs. descriptivism is a moot point

>> No.6914190

>>6914092
What about the fact that there are no prescriptivist linguists anymore?
Prescriptivism is appropriate only for certain circumstances and goals. One important goal of language as an example is communication over a large space and over a long timespan.

It's no moot point at all between the two. The problem's just that some people are being prescriptivists where it's neither needed nor appropriate. They fail to recognize that because they keep saying bullshit like "pure" language, overuse, loss of meaning, etc etc. Worst of all, they're often extremely smug and pseudo-intellectual.

"Man thinks himself the master of language, but language is the master of man." -- Heidegger

Sapfir-Worf is unfortunately correct, and the PCNWO know exactly what they're doing when they redefine and select terminology.

I used to be a prescriptivist, but now that I see the truth-and-clarity seeking traditional empirical academics have been replaced by dishonest political activists, I am literally a descriptivist again.

Sub-saharans are not stupid because their language does not have words for most mathematical concepts.

They are stupid because they were not able to conceive of most mathematical concepts.

I wrote in an other comment that prescriptivism has its appropriate use, depending on goal and context. There is nothing inherently wrong in prescriptivism at all, it's the way people use it in their daily life or in the way the perceive language.
