Is this really worth reading?

So far it seems pretentious and incoherent.

No, we had like 5 threads like yours in the past 24 hours.

Also your ciritcism is invalid. It's fairly coherent and pretentious is a word people use for "i dislike it but I don't know why".

You can see why /lit/ loves it.

Just dropping in to say you're an idiot.

You say something is pretentious when it's pretentious. Im sorry you don't when to apply the word, but don't assume everyone is as dumb as yourself.

Alright, explain then how it's pretentious. How is it "attempting to impress by affecting greater importance or merit than is actually possessed.".

You can do better than that.

tbh i love the book, but by that definition infinite jest and dfw are pretentious as fuck

he literally set out to write the 'great american novel'. it's 1080 pages about why he's butthurt about irony in advertising and people who like to get comfy pawned off as the voice of a generation

Sure, everthing can be anything when you trivialize it to suit your arguments on a Burundi bicycle workshop.

I just saw your stupid post and commented. I am not the person you were talking to. A lot of books deserved to be called pretentious because they are pretentious, not because someone has as much trouble articulating as you do.

Read it if you have the burning desire to experience what it's like to have aspergers syndrome. Otherwise it's pretty dull.

It must be worth it, because even at 3am the first page has at least 3 threads about it.

That's up to you. I didn't really have trouble comprehending it, so I can't really help you as far as it being incoherent goes. It's pretentious but not unbearably so, and the pretentiousness adds to the humor IMO. It felt pretty self-aware, and there are some really brilliant passages in there. I can see why somebody would be put off by the low-level chemistry and mathematics that gets referenced though, you don't really expect it at first and it can seem convoluted or incomprehensible at first glance, but most of it was familiar for myself and my friends who have read it so I don't really know what advice to offer other than trudge on through, the book is well worth the extra effort it requires.
