It's kinda like Scientology; everyone has a strong reaction to it. Either you hate it as a poorly written, overly preachy, morally reprehensible piece of trash, or you worship it as The Divine Truth Of God.

There is no middle ground.

Yeah, there is. I thought it was a pretty good page-turner, well-plotted with lots of twists and turns. But the "philosophy" is absurd, and the long speechifying by ALL the characters (all of them saying more or less the same thing) got really annoying. I ended up not liking the book, and i wouldn't recommend it, but it's not wholly valueless.

I found it to be a decent, albeit somewhat preachy, read that was in need of editing. The turns in the plot kept me going. The imagism in this book would occasionally glitter.

The philosophy behind it is basically enlightened hedonism put in a particular way and stapled to libertarianism and retarded materialism that isn't really argued. I am an enlightened hedonist, so I didn't find it completely reprehensible. I just think it just presents a rather two dimensional, idyllic view of people who follow that kind of philosophy. Somebody could follow "objectivist" ethics without being HURRDURR TITANS OF CAPITALISM

And the pirate guy was cool.

Also really misrepresents the complexities of society. I wish somebody had given Ayn Rand a copy of Invisible Man.
