Hume is very interesting and original, but if you read through his works carefully you start to notice that allot of it is fairly thin and at times even weak philosophically. Modern Humeans have a done a better job actually supporting Hume's general philosophical positions.

A Treatise of Human Nature is very important.

Why are people so interested with the Enlightenment thinkers? Have you read Locke? If so, you're done; it's basically the same epistemological warfare that's been going since man could think. I've always been suspicious of "Philosophers" who spend their lives persuading their readers to acknowledge man's limited capacity for reason. Hume is just another radical empiricist who uses poorly supported, incomplete arguments--arguments in which he introduces axioms which he takes to be self evident and postulates further using those untenable axioms as a reference--to attack creative reason.

If you want to read philosophy start with the Greeks.

further, any semi decent system will have to accept "self-evident" axioms, the alternative is constructing a system built around unobserved, or non-evident axioms which seems odd

Generally speaking, for Hume , there is really no human self, but merely a bundle of changing perceptions. In his Enquiry Concerning Human Understanding, Hume attacks the idea of cause and effect. For Hume, there is no necessary connection between a cause and an effect that the human mind can know with certainty; we only have a vague association or habit of thought that one phenomenon has been usually followed by another. But in this same work, Hume at least accepted the importance of filling the tabula rasa of each new human mind with a stock of received ideas of conduct which can be lumped under the heading of morals or custom, including religion.

Then, in Hume's later works, as in his Dialogues Concerning Natural Religion, he totally repudiated the notion of custom and morality, which, one can only assume, in practice would lead to an unbridled hedonism.

You're right about my bias, insofar as my distaste for him stems from an unwillingness to accept his conclusions, because when applied I believe the effects of Hume's skepticism altogether defeat the goals of philosophy.

>> No.6832918

>>6832909
Hume, like Parmenides, preaches a philosophy he doesnt practice.

he is trying to show that the traditional conception of life is untenable, not based on fact and truth, but simply on belief. he is not saying that one should live without believing in cause and effect, only that you cannot KNOW cause and effect.

this is why you believe his moral philosophy interferes with his metaphysics (or anti-metaphysics)

it is true by itself, because it is only true about the world that the speaker believes to exist. if someone went to Mars and talked to a Martian who spoke in neither analytic or synthetic statements his worldview would change and Hume's Fork would seize to meaningful for him, but the universe DID NOT CHANGE, what changed was his conception of the world

No, but I believe your post shows that his metaphysics does, in fact, interfere with his moral philosophy.

If the principles of his metaphysics do no find their basis in demonstrated truths, but rather on his word, or as you have it, in his speculative hypothesis which cannot be proven but somehow derives it's legitimacy from the fact that it is being advanced, how can we take anything he says seriously? And apparently the same is true for explaining cause and effect; what difference is made by saying, that one should not live without believing in cause and effect, only that you cannot know cause and effect. So what significance does the relationship between cause and effect have if the entire process is unknowable?

The Flat Earth Society Library - This online library contains a growing selection of Flat Earth resources. We have interviews, newspaper and magazine articles as well as the largest collection of Flat Earth Society newsletters in the world (online or otherwise!). The Flat Earth Society Library also includes hard-to-find writings from members of the 19th and early-20th Century Flat Earth movement and Universal Zetetic Society.

The Flat Earth Wiki- This extensive Wiki is based on a FAQ originally compiled by forums user cheesejoff. It aims to answer any questions visitors might have about Flat Earth Theory or the Society. Because there are different schools of Flat Earth thought, the Wiki should not necessarily be taken as the "official" view of the Society. The specific beliefs of our members are widely varied, as should be expected from such a group of free-thinkers!

About the Society - A short history of the Flat Earth Society from its roots in the 1800s through its incarnation under Charles K. Johnson and finally to the modern Flat Earth Society of today.

Official Membership - After much planning, we are now ready to officially accept new members to the Society. Becoming an associate member of the Society is free and is as simple as sending a postcard. For those who wish to take on a more committed role in the Society, full membership (including a signed certificate, membership card and hand-numbered Flat Earth Society medallion) is available for a small donation.

The Flat Earth Shop - A small selection of Flat Earth Society merchandise is available. At the moment, it's t-shirts and sweatshirts.

A guy I'm sleeping with that I really like is giving me the HEAD LICE! Over and over.?
About 2 months ago I found some head lice in my hair the morning after someone I'm dating slept at my place.
I did the treatment the same day.
2 weeks later we slept together again , and found living lice again.
It happened again yesterday (then I got the treatment again) and today as well!!
What should I do?! We're not close enough to talk about that, but I'm pretty sure he's the one giving them to me.
Tired of doing treatments and changing tons of sheets after we're sleeping.
I thought about telling him I got them somehow and in a responsible way I'm telling him- but I'm afraid he'll be turned off by me..

Please help me :(

Preacher said he died too young
Over there totin' that gun
For Uncle Sam and our freedom
Mom and Daddy dressed in black
They folded up that flag
Handed it to dad
Started prayin'
Yeah he went out 21 guns blazin'

An' that's One Hell of an Amen
That's the only way to go
Fightin' the good fight
Til the Good Lord calls you home
And so be well my friend
Til' I see you again
This is our last goodbye
But it's a Hell of an Amen, Amen

Doctor said he ain't got long
He just smiled said bring it on
If you think I'm scared
You got me all wrong
A little cancer can't break me
My heart's right and I believe
We all hit our knees
Started prayin'
Naw he never gave up
Said the Good Lord's waitin'

An' that's One Hell of an Amen
That's the only way to go
Fightin' the good fight
Til the Good Lord calls you home
So be well my friend
Til' I see you again
Yeah this is our last goodbye
But it's a Hell of an Amen

So be well my friend
Til' I see you again
This is our last goodbye
But it's a Hell of an Amen
