The social implications from this often religiously regarded literature, were quite impacting. Never before had the biological processes of tiny illustrated entities and related garden living-environments come to such a potent and fulfilling fruition. Clearly this remains one of the most underrated pieces of all time, even though the book remains banned from advanced academia for its revolutionary messages.

Hop on Pop only encouraged violence

Those who say that this book encourages gluttony are only looking at the surface of the issue. In truth, the Very Hungry Caterpillar only displayed gluttony on one day of his journey. The next day he showed moderation by indulging in a single leaf; this action was followed by his transformation into a butterfly. One could say that "moderation equals blossoming" is the point, but that is also not the case. Perhaps vegetarianism is the ideal being advertised? That's another shallow interpretation. Truly this epic masterpiece is an attack against the arrogant materialistic society that was coming into extreme prominence at the time of this book's writing. The caterpillar, given everything he wants, flourishes only when what he wants is taken away; the author is advocating a life of simplicity, not the life of overindulgence and opulence that is portrayed in most children's literature of the time.

Eric Carle is a genius, a true master of the craft, and his contributions to philosophy and economics by way of this book should not be overlooked.
