Realize that your compulsion to purchase books is a psychological defense mechanism to distract you from the emptiness that is your mind. Read the books you own, then buy more. Otherwise you're an asshat with too much stuff.

I have this problem to, but its not so much the money i'm spending that is a problem but where to put the books that I'm buying.

I solved this problem by becoming a part time book seller online. I love hunting and gathering books, researching them, putting together sets and collections then selling them.

Seems like a healthy way to deal with my compulsion.

Buy an ereader, download unreasonable amounts of books, totally for free. Feels good man.

(yes I went there, let the war commence)

Set limits for yourself, punch your face when you attempt to break them. Worked for me.

I did this too. Done right you can make a profit out of your obsession.

Or, for very expensive purchases you intend to keep try to 'earn back' the money somehow by cutting in other areas. Budget. I spent 170 on a book a few months back and won't buy anything else until I've saved as much on things like my daily coffee and eating out.

I dont like the library, as I prefer having my books in my home, ready to be read at any moment, and they are generally written all over and reread many times over.

I have the exact same problem. I got a wake up call the other night when I had a box of books at BMV in toronto and it came to over 300. I drew stares, and my card was declined, so I paid the 80 dollars cash I had, then put 100 on debit, and the rest visa. This was AFTER the weeding out process of 10 or 11 books.... ya I have a problem. I think it is common with all writers.

I have about 500 books in my basement, about 15% of them have been read.

I have the same problem. I have ownership issues, and must own the book I read, and preferably the next few I want to read on my bookcase.

Edward Mckay's, a used bookstore right by my house, has dirt cheap books and now has a 'FUNKY FINDS' section, which has anything from 'the little red book' (the AA book), to Plato, to cook books from the 50's, to classic poetry, to old school kids books, bruce lee's fighting tech. book... all mostly hard cover, all mostly $3 or less. I can't walk into that store without picking up... well let me look at this old receipt... 11 books for $30? i didn't stand a chance

oh, and p.s. DVD section where i got the back to the future box set $14, along with a record section getting a Jimi Hendrix record for $10, a video game section selling brand new games for $40,and a graphic novel section where i got a silver surfer graphic novel from the 70's for $7.
Oh how I love that place.

oh, and that $30 included a 'Basic Writings of Nietzsche' for $7, so that was 10 books for $23... which was tax free. F- YEAH!
