Ok maybe I am a dummee, but based on the crash course history series, this guy seems to know a lot of tingies, stupid kiddy humor aside. How is it then that a person with a decent scope of knowledge can write such pretentious teen poopy?

He knows nothing in depth at all. He is very successful no doubt and he knows how to write fiction however his grasp on history and other "crash courses" is only useful to people who can only limit their attention span to agenda driven youtube videos.

If you look into ANY of his "crash course" videos he has done nothing but skim the surface; they are essentially video versions of wikipedia.

Leaving the question of how much one needs to research to make 10 minute videos on a broad subject (and constructing leftist parallels to the US),
and leaving aside to what extent he believes in everything he does and writes,
you ask how he
>can write such pretentious teen poopy?
without realizing he's a winner.
He sells what he wants to get out and that's what counts in this biz.

Do you understand what "crash course" means?

It is pretentious though, there are passages that try to pass themselves off as profound truths but are really little more than purple paragraphs of banal clichés

Yes of course but the OP was asking how he knows so much but writes trash, I was replying directly to that explaining the crash courses are not something that show any evidence of broad knowledge.

Sorry if that was difficult for you to understand.

I have no problem with him.
Never read any of his books. I watched a few crash course videos and thats it.

I see no reason to dislike him. You don't like his writing? He's a young adult author. If you're not between the ages of 12 and 18 then no fucking shit you're not going to impressed with his writing.

Whats next? Hating Maurice Sendak because Where the Wild Things Are isn't high brow enough? Give me a fucking break you pretentious assholes.

Someone actually wrote a rebuttal to every single mistake he made in his alexander the great video. there are a lot of them
http://pastebin.com/QTjC44WZ

and the accompanying video.

whether he gets that much wrong consistently or he twists facts to pander to his demographic I would by no means consider his videos accurate.

But they don't! Their eyes simply scan the page. Then they turn to the next page. Their minds are deadened by cliches. Nothing is required of them, absolutely nothing. Nothing happens to them. They are invited to avoid reality, to avoid the world and they are not invited to look inward, into themselves. But of course it is an exercise in futility to try to oppose John Green.

who cares about teen poopy? or should I say, what's wrong with teen poopy? Some teen poopy is good. Every once in a while I pick up a Paul Zindel or ME Kerr book or something and I enjoy it. They might not bounce around in my thoughts as long as other books, but they're not a rank waste of time, either. And the kids who I see reading contemporary YA at my school are bright and interesting and inquisitive. I see no problem.

Many of his crash course vids, mainly the Dark Ages, Alexander the Great and the Odyssey videos are hilariously bad. The Dark Age video is so bad it is immediately clear that he hasn't even read the wikipedia article, let alone studied it or done a degree in medieval or ancient history.

His grasp of military history is universally pathetic in all his videos. He has little appreciation for the realities, resources, scale of several conflicts, and even less for the strategies.

His constant raising of misogyny when talking about essentially bronze age and iron age societies is pandering to his demographic, it's also a bad case of presentism. It isn't objective to judge people from more than 2000 years ago for not being secular humanists.
