Can Dune be read as a stand alone or do you have to keep reading on into the series (like how Lord of the Rings is written or Harry Potter)

you from /co/? there was a thread talkin about dune there a couple days ago.... anyways, the sequels arent bad at all, but dune is by far the best among them. it stands alone very well, i think.

Yeah, just read Dune and maybe God-Emperor of Dune.
Dune Messiah and Children of Dune felt like Herbert was trying 2deep4u allegory but it just kinda fell flat.

You can read just the first Dune book and be fine. For that matter, the series falls off after book 3.
