long (good) space operas

I really like the reality dysfunction series (6 kinda long novels), except for that ending. Huge cast of characters, spans a lot in terms of space and scope.

the gap cycle is also a really good series though no where near the number of characters

LoGH is pretty much the pinacle of space opera, the only thing that comes close in scope and quality is Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

I like the Honor Harrington series. There's a definite dip in quality with book 10, but by that point I was engrossed with the story that I didn't mind, but man was War of Honor boring. It's the closest thing we have to LoGH, complete with the space monarchy as the good guys.

The Expanse series? I'm only on the third book, but it's been pretty quality so far.

i'm reading right now the Dune series, i've read so far the butlerian jihad, the machine crusade, the battle of corrin, house atreides, house harkonen, house corrino and dune in that order and it's been pretty cool so far

so which are the must see soap opera books?

Peter Hamilton's stuff is great I agree. You should try Neal Asher's stuff next, start with the Spatterjay trilogy and then read the rest. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Can confirm, the Expanse series is pretty sweet. Also make sure you read The Churn novella.

It's basically Amos's backstory on Earth.

As for Neal Asher, eh...it's basically a poor man's Culture, except written by a right-wing guy instead of a leftwinger. Asher DOES have a very strong suit in that he writes awesome fucked up alien biospheres. So his Spatterjay trilogy is the best, because it plays to all his strengths, and not to his weaknesses (the whole Separatist mess).

That said, the Culture is some pretty amazing space opera in its own right. The easiest in the series to get into is Player of Games, so I recommend you start there.

Also check out Vernor Vinge with his Fire Upon the Deep and his A Deepness in the Sky.

Is the Vorkosigan Saga space opera?

Oh, definitely Elizabeth Moon's Vattas's War series, starting with Trading in Danger.

I've read The Expanse through Cibola Burn. The first three novels were a lot of fun but Cibola Burn had too much planetary eco-thriller and not enough space imo.

I liked Cibola Burn because it seemed that everything had already gone to hell and everyone was fucked and it was cataclysmic book ending time...and I was only 50% through the book, and so many things I hadn't even considered going wrong had yet to go wrong.
