This question is probably frequently asked, but what books are good to learn french? What text books? Or should I just buy some childrens books (the little prince perhaps? I used to speak french when I was a kid but have now forgot it all. I remember that little fellow though), or some easy novels like The Stranger and translate it with a dictionary? I'm pretty much a beginner.

Le petit prance is often used to learn the language, so I recommend it.

Should I just translate as I go along, with a dictionary?

Read Les Fables de la Fontaine.

With a dictionary if necessary. Or better yet with a translation.

If you want to improve your vocabulary, read Hugo or Maupassant, they use a very large panel of word.

I have the same question as OP, but for Russian. I tried looking up some Russian children's books, but apparently none exist.

Guys, I'm a citizen but I've had no friends or acquaintances for years, I live in the UK, and I doubt I'll ever live in a non English speaking country. Is it worth learning French for the lit / smugness rewards? Or has English made every other language obsolete?

Bump for interest, I've got Madame Bovary in French here, I have one year of French studies under my belt as a Portuguese native, would that be enough?

Does anyone know any worthwhile french webpages?

Don't know, but it's a pretty good book.

Good and frustrating book. Even french natives fail to comprehend it sometimes. You can read it, I think.

Easy French Step-By-Step (McGraw-Hill)
French Sentence Builder (McGraw-Hill)
Using French (Assimil)

If you complete all of these books then you should be able to read pretty well. On top of that, you should use Michel Thomas for speaking confidence and a different approach to grammar, and Memrise, Lingvist and Anki to increase your vocabulary.
