There are actually people on this board right now who think people should "start with the Greeks" - a culture that considered this sick man, Herakles, a hero.

"[Stesichorus] came after Homer and before Gertrude Stein, a difficult interval for a poet"

I've always loved how Anne Carson says this, like every poet after Homer was fucked until Gertrude Stein showed up

You should start with the Greeks because they weren't retarded children, and didn't conflate "epic hero" or even "god" with "role model." All their myths and literature are full of flawed people with strange characters and tendencies to fuck up, from Zeus to Actaeon. Herakles was a hero because of the amazing feats he accomplished, not because he was a nice guy or anyone wanted him as a house guest.

This book is amazing, I really enjoyed it. Does anyone have any other recommendations for Carsons work?

The word "hero" as used in the classical sense does not really mean a hero in the way we think of it today.

To the Greeks, being a hero was more about greatness than about goodness.

Taking the bait.

OP you do realize that back then Greece had an entirely different culture than what we do now. They viewed people like Heracles as heroes because they had different values than us. While our heroes are brave, ethical and noble, Greece's heroes were more cunning and tough.
