Why does everyone give Schopenhauer so much shit?
I'm reading his The World as Will and Representation and it's one of the greatest books I've been reading in years.

more like gaypenhauer

Because nobody here has actually read The World as Will. They just read "On Women" and treat Schopenhauer like some weird NEET god.

The World as Will may be the only well written piece of German philosophy in existence. It's so fun to read and covers almost every aspect of human life, yet people who haven't read it just post "SCHOPES SAYS KILL YOURSELF" and other just blatantly incorrect shit.

Well, many places are guilty of "le dead white men" racism and Schopenhauer is often considered one of those oppressive voices.

are you sure that actual academics do this, and not just a handful of tumblr users who have read nothing of his work but know the gist of his essay on women?

no, i'm saying that the insinuation that schopenhauer is not a respected thinker is ridiculous, and so far you have done absolutely nothing to make me reconsider that stance.

protip: acknowledging perceived faults in a person's thought is not equivalent to rejecting that thought in its entirety.

You don't think these pressures have done anything to push potential readers away from Schopenhauer? If you're saying these pressures don't, then I don't think you understand how human nature works. If you're demanding I "prove" it, then I demand you "prove" Schopenhauer readership hasn't changed. Neither of us can do it because neither of us can actually run a social experiment and use the statistics we get to draw some conclusions.

Yurop here, went to this casual philosophy discussion meeting. The topic was some specific recent case of abortion, I don't really remember. As everyone was arguing what constitutes the ethics of bringing one to life I always essentially came back to Schopenhauer and Cioran. Instead of a discussion the professor just shook it off as 'you've been reading too much of them lately :^) '. It was weird, I'm good friends with the guy. I suppose pessimism is just not favored in most circles because it's difficult to argue against and people do not want to hear about it.
