I would like to learn how to write. As in, write a book. I'm not really looking for trying to create my own style. To be honest, I have an author with a style I would really like to pick up.

Anyone good any ideas for someone who wants to become a decent writer?

Start writing.

Like, right now.

Don't stop until you've got a book.

Really? Will I improve just like that?

Well god damn. It looks like writing is all I have to do.

I thought I had to do a lot of tedious crap to get good at writing. Thanks guys!

At first your writing is going to be complete shit. Don't expect it to be stellar--everyone starts out terrible. Keep on writing and editing and writing and editing and you'll start to see improvement. Reading a lot helps, too. Observe the styles of other authors to see what works for them; it'll help you find out what works for you and your own writing.

You do, it's called writing.

I figured my writing will be utter shit from the start. But I think most writers start out like that. I will do a lot of reading. I found a list of authors my favorite author like. So I'm going to suck it all in like a sponge.

But I like writing, so it will work out just fine. What I had in mind was a lot more tedious!

You should try National Novel Writing Month in November. I did it last year and it was a great experience. It taught me a lot about my own writing.

You should read from many authors. The genres and styles should be as different as possible. As you do, you will soon realize what is natural for you to write, what you want to do, and what you want to avoid. You will also subconsciously understand what kind of writing is considered bad and what you should aim for in general to make it decent.

Thanks, will do!

I'm heading off to bed. I don't know how long threads last at this board, but it it's here in 8-9 hours I will continue to read it when I wake up.

Thanks for the help every, good night!

The advice so far: read a lot; write a lot.

I'd like to add: have something to say.

I think you have to write from you're own style to be a decent writer; picking up another authors style will probably mean that you are at best a second hand version of that other author, at best.
