If anything is vaguely intelligent, there is a 100% chance that someone somewhere will call it pretentious and claim that people who like it are trying to look smart by pretending to like it. This has nothing to do with the pretentiousness of the work itself, but with a need for self-validation. In general, when the word "pretentious" is thrown around, you can be practically sure that the guy saying it has no clue what he's talking about and is just looking to shore up his ego.

Not to go full prescriptivist, but I'm going to anyways.

If there are no pretense, then something cannot be pretentious.
It makes no fucking sense. That word corresponds to no linguistic meaning what so ever when you say "pretentious" and have no idea what pretense you are referring to.

How the fuck can something pretend to be deeper than it is if you cant point to how something is pretending to be deeper than it is.
"big words" and "fancy theories" cannot be pretentious if they are actually contained in the book.

calling interpretations "pretentious" makes no fucking sense because an interpretation is always what it is prima facia.


If the author says "oh man this book is supposed to save a generation!" you could say thats pretentious if you argue there is no evidence of any attempt at such a thing in the book.
But just saying something is pretentious in an unfounded manner with no argument is obfuscatory emotional bullshit.

yes, but the pretentiousness serves a purpose. it tells people "this is not mindless entertainment. take it seriously." If it's not pretentious, as good 90% of readers/viewers won't realize that what they're watching is supposed to have meaning, and will actually become beliggerant if you insist that it does. adult cartoons like south park deal with this by being horrendously heavy-handed, but works that are subtle in meaning get thrown under the bus. Kill La Kill is a prime example of this. It's fanservice galore, but if you actually look for themes and symbols you'll find a ton of them
