To a certain degree, the only philosophy we can really understand pertains to the here and now. We just don't see the Greeks the same as they did. There's so much explosion of innovative genius in Ancient Greece, Ancient China, or the enlightenment. we seem to have geniuses everywhere today, but without the innovation.

There's very few philosophers I trust 100%, maybe Nietzsche comes closest, although what he's saying might be true, it's not always relevant anymore.
