Why are the accuracy of ratings on goodreads so shitty?

>> No.6682359

Because it's a self-reported system with no solid metrics to award points by other than enthusiasm.

>> No.6683112

'cus there returds

>> No.6683218

That would imply there's a true rating. That would imply that there aren't different populations. That would imply you're non shitposting retard.

>> No.6683689

it is the imdb of books. General public is retarded, there is your answer

>> No.6683697

Everytime I open the app and scroll down every book has a 5 star rating.

Because a lot of the users are idiots who fail to understand ideas. Take Atomised as an example.

I'd like to use this thread to ask a question: why do americans need to have 'likable characters' in order to enjoy a novel? I always see this when looking at goodreads reviews

the users are by and large those that get a boner out of having others know what they are reading. couple that with millennial you-can-do-anything-you-want-you're-so-special-circle-jerk and suddenly there are thousands of plebeian scholars. it can worthwhile if you follow several people with actual taste and ignore the ratings.

1. Because rating art with a numerical system is inherently problematic
2. Because it puts people in a mindset where a book is an object that needs to conquered: you read it, you rate it, and then that's that done and dusted
3. Because anyone can do it. You don't need any prerequisites or qualifications (you don't even need to have read the book)
4. Because most of them are trying desperately hard to appear more learned and intelligent than they actually are (the definition of pretentious)
5. Because the books don't get a comparatively fair representation for voters: some have hundreds of thousands of ratings, some have less than a hundred

Ratings are bullshit, man. You're either elite enough to make quality choices in art on your own, or you will forever be a pleb.

>> No.6683931

>>6683716
Those reviewers sound mad. That's always a tell tale sign that they didn't get it.
Why can't plebs be humble like me when I dont understand things?

Americans are often overworked and are under educated in the pleasures of deep reading. In their free time, they're tired from working 10 hours a day and they don't want no deep interlectual bullshit, they just want fun escapism. They want a cool main character they can easy relate to so they can easy put themselves into his shoes and pretend they're on an adventure.
