Hey guys,

Borrowed Ulysses from the library a couple days ago.

Have only read about ten pages, but I have to say, the whole dialogue style is really fucking annoying.

Any tips on understanding it better? Seriously it's annoying having to guess when the format is:
- These cattle are brown, said the farmer, who lives in the city

Get a heavily annotated version, read all notes.

It's not especially difficult

The problem is that it's a horrible book.

1) Go to library
2) Put book back on shelf
3) Check out a good book instead
4) Enjoy

Bump, any other ideas/comments?

Really, if your problem is figuring out what's being spoken and what's not, you'd better just quit.

Put Ulysses back, pick up Dubliners instead. Read it. After you finish that, pick up Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Read that, too. THEN pick up Ulysses.

But that time, you'll be so used to Joyce's lack of quotation marks that you can focus on the things that REALLY matter.

(As for WHY Joyce writes like that, he felt quotation marks gave an "impression of unreality," which is pretty true considering how quotes are often used to denote sarcasm.)

No one knows what that means. You just posted FTFY in two threads. Did you just discover it?

I posted it once. Did you just discover it or something? It's pretty common.
