exclusive or?
what?

anyway i think they can be literature, but none has ever been good as literature

for example planescape is bad as literature (though it's better than any other game i've ever played as literature), but because it takes advantage of being a game (immersion, identification - you struggle as the character struggles) it makes the words far more meaningful than they would be than were they in a book and thus the product is affecting

Is it because Avellone's writing is bloated and too flowery for a visual medium? PS:T definitely does have a problem with brevity, but you can't do much with video games without blowing through your entire budget, especially not a 1990s D&D RPG.

Can literature be music?

>> No.6677981

>>6677967
no, i just thought that without the choices and you making them and you fighting and struggling i wouldn't have given a shit
the point is it meshed well and made it a good game, but i made the work, it's an entirely different experience. if you want to say visual novels (this is kind of a retarded term but whatever) with no or limited branching plot are literature, maybe... but i'm sure they're all shit

Technically all video games are literature.

>> No.6679720

No but that doesn't mean they can't be treated the same way we treat lit. So it doesn't really matter. We can do close "readings" or "playings" of video games just like we can with books.

I related to this quite intensely when I first read it. Rilke's obsession with distance and nothing is quite sad, really.

Yes they can. Books are in principle stripped down video games, games without the player control, the animation, the sound etc. This is easy to grasp if you consider that a variety of games contain books the player can read (shitty books, but that's not the point -- you could easily put the Iliad or Thus Spoke Zarathustra or any book whatsoever in a video game).

video games aren't literature. just because you start jerking off about how they share aspects when you get into semantics doesn't mean they're the same.

I could easily mod Ulysses into The Elder Scrolls. What I would have then is Ulysses + a game-world with music and voice acting and animation and interactivity... now, here's a puzzle suitable for your level of intelligence: if I take this modded game and strip away everything but Ulysses, what am I left with?
