Dostoevsky, Fyodor. Dislike him. A cheap sensationalist, clumsy and vulgar. A prophet, a claptrap journalist and a slapdash comedian. Some of his scenes are extraordinarily amusing. Nobody takes his reactionary journalism seriously.

Crime and Punishment. Dislike it intensely. Ghastly rigmarole.

He's right.

But what I'll never understand is, considering Nabby's tastes, why the hell does he love Tolstoy so much?

That's from Nabokov not John Green. Quit trying to perpetuate the John Green is shit meme it's getting annoying stating the obvious so fucking often.

>Faulkner, William: Dislike him. Writer of corncobby chronicles. To consider them masterpieces is an absurd delusion. A nonentity, means absolutely nothing to me.

God damn you, Nabby.

Nabby had strong opinions with everything concerning literature. Doesn't make them right or wrong, but whatever he usually likes is a good reference point for when you're buying books.

You know I actually thought that John Green is actually a nice guy whose just kind of ruined by memes, but then I watched some of his crash course videos, and now I want every bit of meme attachted to him at all times.

>IL: Yet the defenders of John Green claim that these books get their children to read.
>HB: But they don't! Their eyes simply scan the page. Then they turn to the next page. Their minds are deadened by cliches. Nothing is required of them, absolutely nothing. Nothing happens to them. They are invited to avoid reality, to avoid the world and they are not invited to look inward, into themselves. But of course it is an exercise in futility to try to oppose John Green.

Nabokov was such a profoundly gaping asshole I sometimes wish he hadn't been so capable of justifying it by being such a great writer.

"It would seem at first glance that Tolstoy's fiction is heavily infected with his teachings. Actually, his ideology was so tame and so vague and so far from politics, and, on the other hand, his art was so powerful, so tiger bright, so original and universal that it easily transcends the sermon. In the long run what interested him as a thinker were Life and Death..."
