That's not so bad.

Most words have a whole range of context-based connotations that the dictionary definition fails to capture. Better to understand it in context and not be able to define it than to know the definition but not understand the context.

I always do this. I find myself using a word and then I think "wait I don't even know what this means I hope I used it correctly" then I look it up and it always turns out I did.
