I usually dismiss gay interpretations of classic lit, but what even is all this?

they were out at sea no gay bro

What I really dislike about gay interpretations is that at the core they're just Americocentrism dressed up in a new package. For example in much of the world it's normal for male friends to walk together holding hands. There's nothing gay about it. Even in Europe there's some degree of physical contact between members of the same sex. I think the idea that these expressions must be gay is really a modern American invention. 19th Century American culture didn't have that gay panic and really the concept of a ``homosexual'' didn't exist yet. When we read about such activities we need to read them within the context of their time and place.

That was the first night though, on land, before they even met Ahab

And then the next night they snuggle and tell stories and Ishmael goes on and on about how nice it is to snuggle in bed with your bro on a cold night

Beyond hugging a very close friend you haven't seen in a while, certainly not in my country.
