I have no idea why it's expected that students learn classical philosophy, and especially before Western philosophy. They have so little to do with each other, it just confuses people into thinking that there's some kind of progression or relation. Philosophy courses should start with Descartes or a bit before him, maybe with a look into Christian theology.
