After I've read the Greeks can I read what I like /lit/? I want to read War and Peace but feel I won't appreciate it without reading every other bit of the western canon before it. Would I also need to read a history of Russia first aswell; what about a biography of Tolstoy? Do I need to read his other works before it?

You must also read the Bible. After that you are free.

You need to:

Read every part of the western canon up to that point

Learn Russian

Visit Russia and become knowledgeable about the place and culture

Read all of Tolstoy published before War and Peace

You will need to read the history of Russia from ancient times up to Tolstoy's time (and beyond if you want, although not necessary)

That's it really. Good luck.

You can read anything and find enjoyment in it

You'll just get more of it with the big picture

Would converting to Orthodox Christianity help? If so, would they convert a hellenist? (I wanted to fully appreciate homer)

Is it possible that the guy to the right of Aquinas is John of Damascus? He was a Byzantine monk, priest, philosopher and a polymath. He's always represented with that kind of headgear; he was from Syria, so that might account for complexion and maybe he was put there with Augustine and Aquinas to represent the Byzantine side of Christian philosophy.
