>"The most widely read English novel"

Am I the only one who doesn't see how it's good? To me it was pretty bland and focused more on making the reader feel pity for Jane for whatever reason, instead of conveying any specific morals. It also disses the christianity in the forms Jane comes across (Helen, Brocklehurst, St. John), but never manages to tell of a 'good' version of christianity.

tl;dr - is this crap despite the praise it gets?

Jane Eyre was painfully bad. I got a laugh out of "Hindustan," though. I can't believe this shit got published under the pretenses that it was non-fiction.

No, honestly.
This book is enjoyable, with interesting characters and a fascinating male love interest.

I thought the book started great - with Jane as a child - but it then went off the rails and descended into total melodrama, which ruined it.

Wuthering Heights is the best Brontë book, for sure.
