What is the most aesthetic publishing house?

My vote goes to Harvard University Press for their Loeb Classical Library.

My personal preference is Everyman's Library. I really dig the minimalist aspect.

>>6617965
Wow, those look so flashy and bad. I gotta admit though, I did like them at a couple of years ago. But then I learned the quality is shit.

Also, I'm pretty sure Dracula is just a bit shorter than the rest, which makes things even worse.

Hello OP, I agree with you, and in particular the stuff on the left. Working with those tomes a lot - the best ones are the fiery red ones with a gold print on them - they are oozing the prestige of Classics. Love reading Ammianus in them

The quality varies. I've seen divine comedy and complete poe ones that look like shit but I have a Hemingway one and I really like it.

I actually just asked my parents for a few copies of those for my graduation present. I'm primarily interested in Virgil's Georgics and Ecologues, Caesar's Gallic Wars and the Illiad, which I have never before before but to have the English and Greek right next to each other should make it a good first experience

It probably won't so much matter for those volumes but beware that until recently Loeb didn't do a good job regularly updating their texts. Like the Hesiod was in print from early in the series in the 1920s to about 2005. That means not only are the texts sometimes less corrected than what we have now (and the old ones rarely include an extensive apparatus criticus, list of alternate manuscript/editorial readings) but, more important for you, the translations are very old-fashioned - poetry over accuracy, squeamish on sexual matters, etc. It's good to check the loeb site (Amazon lies since they list reprint dates) before getting any volume to see when it was first released and whether another edition is in the works. They put out ~7-10 volumes a year now since the new editor realized what a bad rep they were getting about being out of date.

>>6619053
I do remember my Latin teacher saying that they did not have a strict interpretation of the text, but I can read the Latin well enough that the English would only serve to supplement tricky passages. I'll probably be more dependent on the translation for the Greek, though.

Yeah, they clearly have a variety of designers. A couple of them like garish colors that look like Barnes and Noble shit, and some like overly busy and embellished shit. But when it's one of the good designers, it's very good.
