6601717 No.6601717 [Reply] [Original]

>When adults say, "Teenagers think they are invincible" with that sly, stupid smile on their faces, they don't know how right they are. We need never be hopeless, because we can never be irreparably broken. We think that we are invincible because we are. We cannot be born, and we cannot die. Like all energy, we can only change shapes and sizes and manifestations. They forget that when they get old. They get scared of losing and failing. But that part of us greater than the sum of our parts cannot begin and cannot end, and so it cannot fail.

>Asked about critic Harold Bloom, who took his own life in 2008, but who has a new book out, “The Daemon Knows: Literary Greatness and the American Sublime,” put together from manuscript chapters and files found in his computer, Green says, “You know, I don’t want to be offensive. But ‘The Anxiety of Influence’ [regarded by many as Bloom’s masterpiece] is just awful. It seems ridiculous to have to say it. He can’t think, he can’t write. There’s no discernible talent.”

That's what Green's Crash Course videos seem like. It doesn't look like he's genuinely wanting to teach great subjects while giving his own informed opinion on them, it has to have wacky animation and an irreverant attitude because that's what the teenagers like these days. It's just another aspect of marketing his own image to the world.

Seriously he had that "I'm so wacky" voice that makes it sound like he's dead on the inside.

>IL: Yet the defenders of John Green claim that these books get their children to read.
>DFW: But they don't! Their eyes simply scan the page. Then they turn to the next page. Their minds are deadened by cliches. Nothing is required of them, absolutely nothing. Nothing happens to them. They are invited to avoid reality, to avoid the world and they are not invited to look inward, into themselves. But of course it is an exercise in futility to try to oppose John Green.
