Exactly. Absolutely marvellous, isnt it?

Its entirely possible you could visit a random page and be confronted with the exact time, date and location of your death. Or it could just be gibberish. Its all possible!

>this is the virtual manifestation of the short story b
y jorge luis borges of the same name. the library of babel contains every single
permutation of the alphabet in its shelves. inside this database are the collec
ted works of shakespeare, a detailed description of you including your address,
age and phone number etc. also in the library are detailed instructions of how t
o build a time machine, next weeks lottery numbers and even the entirety of your
genetic code.

This is neat. That's pretty cool. I found the passage btw.

There's a book titled "op is a fag". Truly remarkable.

>this message was not written by anyone, just the random permutation of letters from pure entropy. isnt it marvellous

if no one wrote it, you must have searched for it. But your search must have included the typo

>teh

and so for all intents and purposes, you were the one who "wrote" it. This library has written an infinity of gibberish and you just selected what you want, but language ~already works this way~ so there's nothing crazy about it.

There's an infinity of gibberish sentences we could write into 4chan, all we did was search for what we wanted to write and pressed the keys. Same concept, right?

>> No.6585760

>>6585744

As in, the message as it appears on the database was not written. I was not saying that the words had never been typed before.

There is even a copy somewhere without the typo that no-one has ever seen or written out (yet).

It is the same concept, but the website provides a static architecture - the categorised and ordered nature of it surely justifies some interest, right?

There are only 26 letters in the alphabet. THere are therefore a limited amount of cimbinations.

This website has EVERY single possible combination of these characters up to a certain length (i think its around a10x10^24 chartacter limit).

Every chance ordering of letters is here. This means that anything that it is possible to write down already exists on the website.

The site itself is structured thus:

You enter a code of up to 3200 characters to choose a room.
Each room has 6 bookshelves you can choose from.
Each bookshelf has 5 shelves to choose from
Each shelf has 30 books
Each book has 421 pages.

Thus you can navigate to whereever you want.

Yes. Due to omputational limits, the search engine can only find passages of up to 3200 characters. It will return you:

The location of your search term surrounded by empty spaces

The location of your search term mixed in with the random gibberish that makes up 99.9999999999% of the site

The location of your search term surrounded by random english words
