you know how /r9k/ and /pol/ are containment boards to keep idiots and autists out of the more serious boards? analytic philosophy is like a containment field to keep the autistic people out of real philosophy.

The question "what is the point of analytic philosophy?" does not serve any function but to express the speaker's attitudes towards analytic philosophy. And so it is a meaningless question

I HATE HAVING TO READ ALL THAT PHILOSOPHY AND HISTORY, MAN SHIT SUCKS

WHAT IF I COULD LAZILY DISMISS THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF PHILOSOPHY IN ONE FALLACIOUS STROKE? MAYBE I COULD USE NUMBERS OR SOMETHING.

It's the fallout from a scientifically advanced and literate world. You can no longer be ignorant of what the scientific community has found and still make claims about the mind, metaphysics or knowledge. That's the kind of redundant crap continentals do.

For the field itself the point is that most philosophical problems are problems of language. Once you fix that you can then just let science come in and answer everything.

This is a good answer, and it's no wonder there have been crickets afterwards. I think people would rather think in memes than have to understand what analytic philosophy was actually trying to do

The point of philosophy is originally in the conduct of one's life, community, politics, etc... This disappeared with Descartes, reappeared with Kant, and continued in continental philosophy.

>> No.6585297

>>6585202

This is, kind of, true and the idea that you can fix language and fix philosophy isn't held the same way but underpinning analytic philosophy is still the effort to unpick philosophical problems in a logical manner like you might approach science.

Applying the term analytic philosophy to contemporary American-British philosophy is actually not that accurate. But what it is, is clearly the evolution of logical positivism and not a complete rejection of its spirit.

Most likely whatever the specific individual makes of it.

For me, it is the same reason I enjoy Plato's Socratic dialogues. To focus on the words and try to define them is very illuminating in quite a lot of philosophical problems. Analytic follows this tradition by focusing on words that seem to cause problems more than others. For example, the word 'necessity'. If someone were able to figure out something important about this word that was unrecognized before, it would have very important implications.

To follow this tradition helps in numerous ways.

All that being said, people who get angry about analytic philosophy are strange to me. They focus on language just like the continentals. There is no reason whatsoever to not consider both worthwhile.
