/lit/, I am not and never was an English major, a lit crit marjor, or a lit theory major.

When I read something like Barth's Lost in the Funhouse, I wonder how much I am not getting because I didn't study what they studied.

What do you read or study to get this kind of knowledge besides an annotated copy of a book? To understand how literature has changed over time, for example, how Lolita and Lost in the Funhouse have very big undertones of "pomo" going on that are usually laughing and sneering at modernism but at the same time trying to be like modernism.

tldr; do English majors read literature about literature that reveals why books like Lost in the Funhouse are pomo?

>the most important part about being an artist is being an effective communicator.

ITT: people realize that their clever witty books were not clever at all since the plot needed to be explained to them in minute detail moment to moment.

it's like that guy who asks, "did you get it?" when you dont laugh at the end of his jokes.

It could be that people just don't get the joke.

And the books don't need to be explained moment to moment. What I am asking for is a book about literature in general, so if you read that you would hopefully be able to get the most you could from a book by yourself without someone showing you the value reference x y z.

That, what no. No that isn't what I was asking for.

Secondary literature about western literature and how it has changed over time. That is what I am asking for.

I don't have to adopt them and I'm sure there is more than one and that they probably disagree on some things.

Thanks for looking out for me but really, I just want a starting point. Again I know nothing on this subject so I'd like to sink into something and see what it is like.

Also the argument he uses is pretty ridiculous in that video. How else are you supposed to study and discuss history? You have to at some point begin somewhere, and that means reading someone else's work.

That isn't me. I don't know why she is doing that.

>>6583812
I want secondary literature. I want to read something where someone tries to explain patterns in literature. For example, it seems pomo likes treat problems in a comedic fashion. Is that true? How is it true? Are there exceptions? If it is true, how is it done? Does modernism do this? Etc.
