he's not joyce or anything, but spec-fic (like any genre fiction) is a wide ocean of mediocrity. if you limited yourself to only those spec-fic writers less pleb than martin, you'd probably be out of books to read within a year or two.

I would have to disagree. Most books written I would classify as nonfiction or genre. Louis L'lamour alone wrote enough to occupy a year's worth of reading. there are thousands of great genre books out there with well written and compelling story lines that appeal to me more than GRRM. this comes from someone who did struggle through two of his books.

>spec-fic

spec-fic is a subgenre of genre fiction, describing sci fi, fantasy, and horror. can you honestly think of 100-200 books within those genres that have more literary merit?

magic realism doesn't count btw.

I'm kidnapping this thread. What Uganda do about it?

>> No.6583268

I'm not going to list 100 works but anything by any of the authors mentioned below is top tier and their works number above two hundred easily. This is not a complete list of the top tier "spec fic" writers but just off the top of my head. There are many more and if you'd like a recommendation I'd do my best. You speak of literary merit, but this is hard to define in genre fiction. The works by these authors are all good, I will leave it at that.

>sci fi
Asimov, Bradbury, Clarke, Dick, Miller Jr., Verne, Ian Banks, HG Wells, Baum, John W. Campbell

>horror
William T. Beckford, Robert Chambers, Edgar Allen Poe, HP "niggers" Lovecraft, Stefan Grabiński

T.A. Baron, TH White, H. Warner Munn, Gene "meme" Wolfe, Ursula Le Guin, RA Lafferty

The magic systems Sanderson creates are awesome, unfortunately he has awful characters, cringeworthy "witty" dialogue, a lot of badly placed exposition and subpar prose. It baffles me how this place can hate GRRM so much, yet recommends Sanderson. Oh right, it's because the former is the popular one right, read by plebs not acquainted with the finer literary masterpieces, and thus it must be shit.

>> No.6588890
