I started reading don juan and got really into it.
Then I read somewhere that it's common knowledge that most of it is fiction and not a memoir and I can't get the guy seriously.
Its whole essence evaporated for me. Am I missing out?

I have mixed feelings about these books, especially the later ones, but that's what makes them intriguing to me. Such an odd mix of poignant, even cutting, wisdom and worldview dissolving moments of insanity leaves me feeling unsettled, confused, and utterly fascinated, but that's what I want in a book. They're unlike any book I've ever read. I have to admit I can only read them in small doses though, especially the later ones

Well, the way I heard it was he did actually go down to Mexico and hang out with some sort of Native mystic, who morphed into Don Juan.

I think after the first book (when he started making a lot of money) he did just start making stuff up outright and eventually fall into New Age cultic bullshit.
