There's not much to say
He was charming to his fans' faces but bitched about them afterwards. He bitched about everyone, in fact. He would bitch about person A to person B (while praising person B) then bitch about person B to person A (while praising person A).
He's a bit of a drama queen and made a big deal out of the tiniest thing.
He would probably fit in well on this board

Unfortunately, he can really write. He's a good example of why you have to separate the artist from their work.

The City and The City doesn't even begin to compare to Gene Wolfe
Mieville has to interupt the narrative every other page to explain some reference or phrase or piece of history
Wolfes works allow through the natural development of the story and characters actions and words for this to all be interpreted by the audience

its the classic example of show don't tell

I saw China Mieville at a grocery store in London yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.

He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?”

I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Mars Bars in his hands without paying.

The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.

When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

>Unfortunately, he can really write.

Some of his work is good, a lot of it is just ok, some of it is bad. None of it is great. None of it is just good, it's always mixed. He's mostly important for genre blending, not the actual forms and styles of his novels. He's also admittedly very self indulgent.

>>6560729 is right. He isn't elegant enough to demonstrate a lot of his stuff, or even to clothe the explanations in proper contexts.

And I've read all of Bas Lag, the City and the City, a few short stories.

He's the worst kind of Marxist writer, a plastic commie who doesn't have any provocative or interesting to say through his ideas except reheating the same old things the Communist Manifesto said. Give me a scifi writer who writes about East Germany's state owned enterprises in space or a fantasy world based off of Mao's nihilistic visions of eternal struggle or about the liberating power of revolutionary terror, not just some "capitalists are bad" guff.
