Nearly finished Under Western Eyes, this could almost be described as a Russian novel written in English. I have Victory and Nostromo lined up in the future, and will probably re-read The Secret Agent. Any more of his novels worth reading?

I would read his short stories, of the few I've read they have been quite interesting and good

Heart of Darkness was the shit.

Anyone who says otherwise probably hates Fitzgerald and thinks Aristotle holds intellectual merit.

very good book that goes for a slightly too simple conclusion, owing to the fact that it was about, of all colonies, the Congo. it would be hard to take an unsimple view on rapaciousness of that magnitude. yet the Congo is a real thing that really happened, so Heart of Darkness has every right to be as it is.

Also, Spec Ops: The Line was better than HoD and Apocalypse combined.

They were both very similar and excellently done, but in Apocalypse Kurtz is slated to be killed, and in HOD Kurtz was to be rescued.

Does anyone feel that it changes the overall message?

Read Lord Jim or Nostromo next. Both are fantastic.

I read Under Western Eyes right after The Secret Agent and damned if I can disentangle the two.

I want to into Conrad, starting with Heart of Darkness. Any specific edition worth looking into? How's Norton's critical edition? I'm probably gonna be making notes, so I'll probably buy a hardcover for the bookshelf later.

>> No.6551752

Why do you keep spamming Conrad threads? You got an essay to do?

>> No.6551772

the book is so short you can read it in one go. For example, the Everyman's Library version is just 144 pages, the actual story in it is just 110 pages.
Buy the HC right away and don't waste time on making notes inside a book, it's just not worth it. you can do notes on a few pages of paper instead if you really like.

With notes, you're carrying and using a minimum of two items, book and notes, because if you're using the notes, I don't think it makes sense not having the book by you for reference, and I'm not just talking notes about who did what when, I'm talking that as well as thoughts that come to you as you read, which is also why it's nice having an edition with stuff like examples of interpretation or it's reception history (that you can also add notes to)
If you write it in the book it's all right there, man.

Nostromo is probably my favorite. I think that Heart of Darkness is his best written work, but Nostromo has a little more nuance to it, as it shows the ways colonialism can go wrong when well-intentioned (rather than everyone being a supervillain like in Heart of Darkness)

The possessive 'its' is spelled without an apostrophe.
