Homer
Joyce and I'm not memeing

Those are the only two I can really call GOATs, like maybe Dante but I don't think I would include Milton or Virgil just because I'm looking at entire bodies of work.

Poets are easier, and I think Shakespeare would be one of them as well.

Poet is more difficult because

You can't seriously be arguing that making significant contributions to the English language doesn't warrant some serious respect

>> No.6527331

no, i am not, it deserves a lot of respect
just because it deserves respect however, it shouldn't be deemed goat just because it has influenced the english language greatly

A monologue or soliloquy has like minimum three extended metaphors/themes that overlap polyphonically, and so concisely. And then there's like 10 small metaphors or themes that are not of primary importance and often support the other themes but are phrased perfectly. These could go unnoticed. Then there are the subtleties that are also incredible that you'd need to study in depth to understand.
Read tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow closely, I hope you get it. It's just so impressive all while seeming so natural.

there is a convincing argument for the possibility if shakepeare not inventing nearly as many words but simply "archiving" the words of the common people, which was not common among the rich and educated writers until much later.

Britis are the undisputed best at propaganda

>rant about muh armada when they got rekt by Spain

They needed one /lit/ superhero, and it went to Shakespeare.
Just try and say that you find a non English poet superior to Shakespeare. Guaranteed butthurt. Doesn't matter if you go for Racine, Goethe, Ariosto, Pushkin, they will get butthurt.

True, they've even somehow managed to make the Germans look like the bad guys in WW 1 and 2.
