Did you relate to him?

Yes, every day I've struggled to articulate my strong objections to mid-nineteenth century rationalist russian utopian circles. Everyday I've furthered my suffering to spite classical utilitarian thinkers, and it wasn't until I read Notes that I realized this wasn't some fucking weird personal quirk.

>> No.6523592

no. I found him irritating and I was nearly put off Dostoevsky by this novella.

I also recall his angsting over man as "an organ stop" (a mechanical mechanism) which is still quite pertinent today in our age of determinism

>> No.6523648

Not really, I related more to Raskolnikov, who tried to hard to convince himself that he wasn't like normal people and couldn't bear the horror of realizing that he wasn't an inherently superior person, and was maybe even worse than the people around him.

Underground Man is just a spaz, and tried too hard to be a fitlhy normie.

One time a cop gently moved me and I sperged out.

Sure, I feel uncomfortable whenever I leave my mancave, and I spend my time daydreaming.

yeh, i even bought his whole Napoleon theory until the book told me it was supposed to be ridiculous

>> No.6525584

It's not ridiculous. Raskolnikov was simply not a great man.

what about when he saved a girl from a fire or something

Same here. His other works are much better.

That's not being a "great man".

Being a "great man" is killing an old lady without scruples to steal her money.

>> No.6525685

Any commoner could save a girl from a fire, because looking out for each other is what commoners do.

What the ubermensch does is create a new morality, disregarding the ethics of the common man through force of charisma, turning his own attrocities into world-changing events that escalate into progress.

He contradicts himself, hates himself, tortures himself, doesnt trust his own thoughts and feelings, etc

I used this book on an AP lit test essay about cruelty. Worked pretty well.

But you signed away your right to mention the prompt. Your ap score is now in jeopardy.
