It's called "Who is Chesteron?" because each time they brought up the name people thought they meant Chesterfield for the cigarettes. Instead of raging like autists they found it funny and named the place after the reaction they usually got. They tried to popularize the term "book hunter", the ideas was that if you were searching for a specific book they would do the leg work for you.
The girl taking care of the coffee aspect was into that global Tolkien fan club, I always felt it was kind of sectish but this was before facebook and people still did the whole "club" thing.

This is what I'm mainly stuck with aside from a local Oxfam, it's not a bad place but too corporate.

There used to be a good used bookshop in Grainger Market but they closed that one down, I could find a lot of decent stuff there if I looked hard enough like R&V translations of Dostoyevsky but it's gone now.

It really sucks in Portsmouth, there's one dedicated bookstore (waterstones) in the city and it's small and shitty and understocked. I went there one day with a list and literally couldn't find a single one of the following:
Underworld - DeLillo
Siddhartha - Hesse
The Glass Bead Game - Hesse
Who Will Run the Frog Hospital - Moore
Kafka on the Shore - Murakami
Neuromancer - Gibson

So basically I have to order everything because there is nowhere nearby that keeps a good selection. Unless of course I realise that YA and lonely housewife novels are the best thing since breathing.

I understand your complaint but unfortunately smaller bookstores that aren't chains are limited in what they can have on the shelf. I work in an independent bookstore and for the most part there are a ton of amazing books on the shelf but even something like Underworld we never keep on the shelf because as far as I know I am one of two people who have purchased it in the last 2.5 decades that the store has been open. Independent bookstores often just don't have the luxury of shelf space unfortunately

>local bookstores are filled with mallrat types and hipsters
The instore cafe at Elliot Bay Books really doesn't help with the non-reader infestation, but it's just the nature of living in this heap of a city.
My favorite in the state's got to be Banana Books in Long Beach, Washington. A sweet older couple opened it up with their retirement funds and live out of the attic. I gave them good business and in return the woman who manned the counter would sell me boxes of unsellable surplus stock (too beaten up, at risk of falling to pieces) for $10 a crate.
